Is Russia preparing to fulfill its role as Magog?

On the 4th of April 2018, as I was in prayer with my wife, I had a brief vision in which I saw a map of a country being drawn out. The word “Russia” appeared across it. The map was not as large as that of Russia so it may have just been part of it. I then saw a persons arm stretched out in front of me with a watch fastened onto it. The hands of the watch moved quickly across its face, faster than normal and then they stopped. After meditating on this for a while, I realized that the  Lord was asking us to watch Russia closely in regards to the time we are living in. Bible prophecy has seemed to occur in slow motion in the past but has now apparently picked up pace in the last few weeks just as the vision depicted! Why do i say this? Events in recent days seem to be aligning in preparation for the War of Gog and Magog.

What is the War of Gog and Magog?

There are a series of end time wars that are to occur before the Millennial reign of Christ and one of the most famous ones mentioned in Ezekiel 38 and 39 is the War of Gog and Magog. This war involves a confederation of nations that will attack Israel led by one that comes from the North of Israel called Magog. There is debate about the timing of this war but there is a major reason why this war can only fit a pre-tribulation scenario. The Bible indicates that there will be a seven year period after this war during which the weapons that would have been used will be destroyed and used for fuel. This period can only correspond with the seven years of tribulation before the Millennium.

Then those who live in the towns of Israel will go out and use the weapons for fuel and burn them up—the small and large shields, the bows and arrows, the war clubs and spears. For seven years they will use them for fuel.

Ezekiel 39:9

This war may possibly be the catalyst for the long awaited Middle East Peace treaty between Israel and the nations of the World that would place the Antichrist onto the World stage.

The Players

Map showing nations to invade Israel during War of Gog and Magog

The word of the Lord came to me:  “Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshek and Tubal; prophesy against him  and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of Meshek and Tubal.  I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws and bring you out with your whole army—your horses, your horsemen fully armed, and a great horde with large and small shields, all of them brandishing their swords.  Persia, Cush and Put will be with them, all with shields and helmets, also Gomer with all its troops, and Beth Togarmah from the far north with all its troops—the many nations with you.“‘Get ready; be prepared, you and all the hordes gathered about you, and take command of them.  After many days you will be called to arms. In future years you will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. They had been brought out from the nations, and now all of them live in safety.

Ezekiel 38:1-8

There are several nations that are mentioned in the prophecy that will be involved in this war. God through Ezekiel refers to most of them by the names of their ancestors who descended from Noah after the flood (see Genesis 10). The modern day nations from these grandchildren of Noah correspond to where each of them settled:

  1. Magog whose greek name is Scythia and was identified by ancient historians with part of modern day Russia.
  2. Mesech and Tubal corresponds with Turkey.
  3. Persia corresponds with modern day Iran.
  4. Cush corresponds to modern day Ethiopia and Sudan.
  5. Put corresponds to modern day Libya.
  6. Gomer is understood by Jews to stand for Germany; the name Germany is thought to have come from the term Gomerland.  In addition, Jews from Germany are known as Ashkenazi Jews, named after Ashkenaz, one of the sons of Gomer. Gomer was a son of Japheth who was a son of Noah. (see Genesis 10:2-3)
  7. Beth Togarmah corresponds to modern day Turkey and Armenia.

The Syrian War sets the stage

In March 2011, protests erupted in Syria’s southern city of Deraa, inspired by the “Arab Spring” in neighboring countries. When the government responded with force, the protests demanding President Bashar al-Assad’s resignation spread nationwide. This only increased the governments resolve to crackdown on the protests. Opposition supporters took up arms, first to defend themselves and later to rid their areas of security forces. The violence rapidly escalated and the country descended into civil war.

The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, was reported in September 2011 to be vocally in favor of the Syrian government. When the uprising developed into a civil war, there were increasing reports of Iranian military supporting and training the Syrian army. By December 2013 Iran was thought to have approximately 10,000 operatives in Syria. Since Iran is currently Israels arch enemy, the Jewish nation responded by carrying out airstrikes on Iranian targets in Syria to slow down their entrenchment in their neighbors territory.

In the ensuing chaos of war, a Jihadist group called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) also emerged and ceased large swathes of Syrian territory where it enforced Sharia law.

On 30th September 2015, Russia entered the war in response to a request from the Syrian government. Russia initiated airstrikes on ISIS and US backed rebel targets. These had been fighting the Assad government forces. Many therefore perceived the conflict to have then turned into a proxy war between the US and Russia.

Turkey in cooperation with the US first got involved in the War by supporting some of the rebels fighting Syria’s government. This initially put them at loggerheads with Russia. The nation also made several incursions into Syria claiming them to be acts of self defence against groups they perceived as threats to Turkish national security. Over time however, Russia, Iran and Turkey started working together in Syria.

One such major demonstration of this was on 4th April 2018 where Russian President Vladimir Putin met with President’s Tayipp Erdogan of Turkey and Hassan Rouhani of Iran in Turkey’s capital of Ankara to discuss how they could stabilize Syria. This was in response to President Trumps desire to pull US troops out of the conflict.

Then on 9th October this year, after US President Trump withdrew US troops from Northeastern Syria, Turkey invaded this area to create what they called a “Safe Zone” to resettle Syrian refugees in Turkey and to clear the area of Kurds whom they perceived as a threat. A permanent ceasefire between Turkey and the Kurds in the area invaded was only announced after President Erdogan met President Putin of Russia in Sochi where they reached an agreement on how to handle the “Safe Zone”.

Magog’s growing influence

Get ready; be prepared, you (Gog, of the land of Magog) and all the hordes gathered about you, and take command of them. After many days you will be called to arms.

Ezekiel 38:7-8

Ezekiel prophesied how Russia would be in a position to influence the nations that would be involved in Israel’s coming invasion. We have already seen this happen due to US President Trumps “America First” policy that has caused him to lessen US involvement in the conflict. This has created a power void that Russia seeks to fill, and has arguably already done so. This was shown by the way Putin managed to play a part in stopping Turkey advancing further into Syria last week.

President Putin’s desire for influence is not only for the Middle East, but Africa too where some of the nations in the prophesied alliance will come from. On the 23rd and 24th of October this year, Russia held a Summit where the heads of African states were invited to Sochi to foster cooperation between the country and Africa. This is the first time that Russia has held an event of such a magnitude involving the continent. This was another demonstration of Russia actively growing its influence in relation to the players in this coming war!

It is also interesting to note that one of Russia’s major export to its allies like Turkey, Iran and many African nations are weapons. The scripture above in Ezekiel calls Russia and its allies to prepare themselves for the war and one of the ways they are doing this is by arming themselves with weapons from Magog!

Our Redemption draws near!

This oversimplified summary shows how three of the major actors of the War of Gog and Magog are already in play North of Israel, just like the God said through Ezekiel. We are also witnessing Russia seeking to build bonds with African nations where part of the future alliance in this war will come from. Not only is Russia strengthening its influence but is also actively arming its allies. In fact, God has also confirmed the importance of these events with celestial signs in the heavens! This will be the focus of the next post.

All this shows that the bible is accurate and reliable and that the rapture and tribulation are near. What are you doing to help yourself and others get ready to meet Jesus?

if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.
